The word ‘yoga‘ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means ‘to join’. Thus, the country of origin of yoga is in India ,where for many hundreds of years it has been a part of people’s life. Yoga is associated with the culture and heritage of India. Yoga typically means ‘union’ between mind,body and spirit.The union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul.The aim of yoga is to bring about a higher or more accomplished state of mind which transcends man’s usual everyday experience and open for him anew field of vision and capacity to grasp that vision. A yoga is a form of spiritual practice which is not affiliated to one particular religion or philosophy but every religion adopts yoga and its benefits.
Several asans and kriyas of yoga help people to keep healthy and feet. The sacred science of Kriya Yoga consists of advanced techniques of meditation whose devoted practice leads to realization of God and liberation of the soul from all forms of bondage. It is the royal or supreme technique of yoga. It is practiced for deep relaxation and healing.
People can stay free from disease by practicing Yoga daily. Almost all diseases under sky can be cure by yoga. Yoga can cure many diseases like asthma and arthritis if it is practiced regularly. Yoga can control the blood sugar to a normal level. It can cure lower back pain and indigestion. The splitting headaches that are symptoms of migraine can be easily cured through yoga.
In India there are six different branches of yoga
Hatha Yoga: This branch of yoga uses physical postures or asans.
Bhakti Yoga/Yoga Devotion: Bhakti Yoga teaches a person to have devotion to the one or Brahma by developing a person’s love and acceptance for all things.
Raja Yoga/Yoga of Self Control: Raja Yoga is based on the techniques of eight limbs of Yoga found in Yoga Sutra.
Janana Yoga/Yoga of Mind: Janana Yoga basically deals with mind i.e., man’s intelligence.
Karma Yoga: In Karma Yoga it is believed that your present situation is based on your past action.
Tantra Yoga/Yoga of Rituals: Tantra Yoga is about using rituals to experience what is scared.
Though Yoga has originated in India, it is now internationallypracticed. Now a day’s yoga is rapidly emerging in the Western world as a discipline for integrating the mind and body into union and harmony. The emergence of Yoga from east to west and outside has made it globalized. June 21 was declared as International Day of 11.The goal of Yoga are expressed differently in different religion. In theistic Hinduism, Yoga may be seen as a set of practices intended to bring people closer to God- to help them achieve union with God. In Buddhism ,which does not postulate a creator- type God ,yoga may help people deepen their wisdom, compassion and insight. In western nation where there is a strong emphasis on individualism .Yoga practice may be an extension of the search for meaning in self and integration of the different aspects of being.
Thus in short the ultimate aim of practicing yoga is to create balance between mind and body.It’s a spiritual journey to self-discovery and to the present moment- the only moment that truly exists. Yoga encourages you to reflect on yourself and find your inner peace. It exercises not just your body but mind as well.
